From Variety.com ...
Captain Picard 'Star Trek' Series at CBS All Access
Enlists Hanelle Culpepper to Direct
---------------------------------------------------
The new "Star Trek" series centered on Capt. Jean-Luc Picard
has brought Hanelle Culpepper onboard to direct.
As previously reported, the CBS All Access series will see
Patrick Stewart reprise the role he played for seven seasons
on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Culpepper will direct
the first two episodes of the series. In doing so, she will
be the first woman to direct the opening episode of a "Star
Trek" series in franchise history.
[ Whoop-de-frigging-do! Who gives a flying crap whether the director is
male, female, black, white, or purple-with-green-stripes?? We only care
that they do the job *PROPERLY* ... but unfortunately it's already far
too late for the Star Trek franchise anyway. :-( ]
Discovery" for All Access, including the episode "Vaulting
Ambition" in Season 1 and the upcoming tenth episode of
Season 2. In addition to her work on "Discovery," Culpepper
has previously directed episodes of shows like "Gotham,"
"How to Get Away With Murder," "Counterpart," "Shooter," and
"American Crime." She is an alumna of AFI's Directing
Workshop for Women.
"Hanelle is a gifted and dynamic filmmaker whose directorial
choices are always deeply rooted in character," said series
executive producer Alex Kurtzman. "I've been a huge fan of
her work since she started with us on "Discovery," and she's
the perfect person to re-introduce the beloved character of
Picard to longtime fans and new viewers alike. We're
thrilled she's joining our Trek family on this next
adventure."
Culpepper is repped by Verve, Metamorphic Entertainment, and
Hirsch Wallerstein.
Little is known about the plot of the Picard series, beyond
that it will tell the story of the next chapter of Picard's
life after the events of "Next Generation." Kurtzman, Stewart,
James Duff, Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, Heather Kadin,
Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth will serve as executive
producers with Aaron Baiers serving as co-executive producer.
There we are. Nine executive producers, one lousy show.
The series will be produced by CBS Television Studios in
association with Kurtzman's Secret Hideout and Roddenberry
Entertainment.

There we are. Nine executive producers, one lousy show.
This has peaked my interest in the naming of positions used in the
T.V./Film industry!! As I understand things ....

The *Actors* are the people that work in front of the cameras.
The *Writer* writes the words/dictates the actions that the actors
say/do in front of the cameras.
The *Director* directs how the actors work in front of the cameras.
The *Producer* organises the finances required to pay everyone for doing
whatever they do. If there are several doing this, they are co-producers!

Am I wrong??

So what do *Executive Producers* do?? Are they the representative of the
Firm that is bank-rolling the production??

What, then, might "Co-Executive Producers" do?? Several representatives
of the bank-rolling firm??

Anybody??

Produces don't just line up finances. They organize the logistics of
the whole operation. They arrange film locations, hire and fire the
most important people like the director, hire the trucks to move
gear...the actual business end of the production. They are usually the
bosses. Someone who just lined up finances would be more likely to get
an executive producer credit but they can also be handed to people like
the holders of the intellectual property rights.

"Executive Producers", like "executives" in business, do nothing
useful, have no real power over what is / isn't done, come up with
piles of ridiculousideas that are best ignored, and are vastly
over-paid. It's more of a honorary postition with the names being
listed simply to appease their egos or for legal reason (such as having
a Roddenberry name listed on a Star Trek series).

One of those executive producers is the show runner, who actually does stuff.

When I have noticed one of the Stars of a series getting a 'producer'
credit, I'd just figured it was a way of giving the Star a pay raise
with-out actually giving them an actual pay-rise!!

"the show runner" ... the term that really inspired my query, as it is
widely used to describe the boss of "Doctor Who" series production.

What the heck is everybody else doing if "the show runner" is, really,
the BOSS??

In this case, "doing the job right" would involve running in terror
in the opposite direction to avoid having one's name anywhere near
this turkey.
